The four editions and Custom

  • OzzAuthor and editor

GhoulApp knows four editions of Vampire: The Masquerade. Your character is built in one of them and a chronicle runs in one of them or in Custom. The edition decides the steps in the creator, the traits on the sheet and how the dice are read.

The editions

  • 5th Edition (V5) is Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. It plays with Hunger dice, Predator Types and Touchstones.
  • 20th Anniversary (V20) is Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition. It has the blood pool, Virtues, Nature and Demeanor.
  • Dark Ages is Vampire: The Dark Ages. It's built on V20 rules and set in the medieval era with Roads and the High and Low Clans.
  • 6th Edition (V6) is a public playtest of the next edition. Its rules aren't final and can still change. See What V6 is.

You choose the edition on the first step of the creator, Era. Each edition on that step shows what counts as a success, which skills are on the sheet and the morality track so you can compare them before you choose. Choose before you start: every step after Era is built for that edition.

The edition switch at the right of the top bar shows a short code: V5, V20, DAV20 or V6. Open it to see the four with their full names and pick one. It sets the edition the app opens things in, like the creator. With the list open the arrow keys Up and Down move between editions and Esc closes it.

How each edition rolls

EditionA die succeeds onA 10
V56 or morea success. Two 10s together make a critical
V20 and Dark Agesthe difficulty or more (6 unless it's set otherwise)a plain success (two with a Specialty)
V68 or morecounts toward Quickening and isn't a critical

Hunger dice are V5 only. A critical with a 10 on a Hunger die is a messy critical. A failed roll that shows a 1 on a Hunger die is a bestial failure.

In V20 and Dark Ages every 1 takes away one success. A roll with no successes and at least one 1 is a botch. Five or more successes left after that is an exceptional success.

V6 works the other way round. The difficulty takes dice out of your pool before you roll. One die of 8 or more is enough to succeed and each one after it makes the result better. A 1 only matters when nothing succeeded: then the roll is a painful failure.

Which sheets each chronicle takes

When you make a chronicle you pick its system and the system decides which sheets can join it:

ChronicleSheets it takes
V5V5
V20V20
Dark AgesDark Ages and V20
Customevery edition, V6 included

There's no V6 chronicle. A V6 sheet can only join a Custom chronicle.

A Custom chronicle is for homebrew games and for tables where players use different editions. Dice there follow each player's own sheet so a V5 sheet rolls V5 dice and a V20 sheet rolls V20 dice in the same chronicle. A Dark Ages sheet rolls the V20 way. The storyteller of a Custom chronicle can also close an edition to new characters. When you make a character from inside that chronicle the Era step still lists it but marks it Closed at this table and you can't pick it.

A sheet that doesn't match a chronicle can't be bound to it. When you pick your sheet in a chronicle the ones that don't fit are greyed out and say why.
