Frenzy checks

  • OzzAuthor and editor

On a V5 vampire's sheet press the Willpower title. That opens the Frenzy Check panel beside the sheet. At the live table you'll also find Resist frenzy in your actions and it opens the same panel.

Building the pool

First pick what set the Beast off. Fury is for rage, insults, humiliation and injury. Hunger is for blood, starvation and anything else that triggers Hunger. Terror is for fire, sunlight and supernatural fear. The panel always opens on Fury.

The panel works out the pool for you. The line under Calculated pool reads like "Willpower 4 + Humanity 2". Willpower is what you have left after damage. Humanity is a third of your Humanity rounded down. The total shows as Pool on the right.

A few things change it on their own and each one shows as a tag under the pool:

  • a Brujah loses dice equal to their Bane Severity on a Fury frenzy, unless they took a variant Bane,
  • a Gangrel with the Survival Instincts variant Bane loses the same on a Terror frenzy,
  • the Cold Dead Hunger Merit adds two dice on a Hunger frenzy.

The pool never drops below 1. When it would the tag "Minimum pool 1" shows.

Some clans get a note under the pool and no change to the numbers. A thin-blood is reminded that they frenzy only when something supernatural provokes them, unless they have Bestial Temper. A Banu Haqim on a Hunger frenzy is told the Difficulty their Bane calls for. Set that Difficulty yourself.

Rolling it

Set the Difficulty your storyteller gives you. It starts at 2 and runs from 1 to 10. Then press Use Pool. That doesn't roll yet. It puts the pool in the dice roller so you can check it and roll from there. Cancel closes the panel and nothing is rolled. Esc closes it too.

The panel never writes to your sheet. A Frenzy Check never uses Hunger dice, Blood Surge or a Willpower reroll and the tray says so on the line where Hunger usually sits. How the result reads is in How V5 dice work in GhoulApp.

Other editions and characters

V20 and Dark Ages have no frenzy panel. There you roll the Virtue your storyteller asks for. Press its name on the sheet or pick it from your actions at the table. Dark Ages uses your Road's Virtues. Pressing Willpower on those sheets rolls Willpower. See How V20 and Dark Ages dice work.

Ghouls, revenants, mortals and V6 characters have no frenzy check.
