Rouse Checks, Willpower rerolls and Blood Surge

  • OzzAuthor and editor

The V5 dice tray does three things that change your sheet: it makes Rouse Checks, it rerolls dice for Willpower and it adds Blood Surge to a roll. All three need your vampire's sheet linked to the chronicle. See Link your character to a chronicle. How the dice themselves read is in How V5 dice work in GhoulApp.

Rouse Checks

With your sheet linked a Rouse button sits under the Hunger box. Press it for a Rouse Check. It's one die. On a 6 or more nothing happens and the feed reads "Rouse Success". On anything lower your Hunger goes up by one, the sheet is saved and then the feed reads "Rouse Failure". The button only makes the check. It doesn't arm Blood Surge.

At the live table R makes the same check when your sheet is a V5 vampire bound to the chronicle. It doesn't work while you're typing in a box or after the session has ended. On a chronicle page outside a session the key does nothing, so press the button there.

A V5 storyteller with no character bound gets a plain Rouse at the live table too. It posts a Rouse Check to the feed and changes no Hunger.

When a power calls for one

A Discipline power that costs Rouse Checks can make them for you. That's the Rouse checks row in Dice settings. Each choice shows its own line under the row.

Off leaves power costs to you. Auto makes the power's checks and saves them after the action. Ask puts a chip in the tray when you roll a power, like "Make 1 Rouse Check?". Press its check mark and the checks are made for you after this action. Leave it and you make them yourself.

Spending Willpower to reroll

Your newest roll in the chronicle has a WP button next to its result. It shows on your own regular V5 rolls only. A Rouse Check, a frenzy or Remorse roll and a power you activate don't get one.

You can pick the dice first. Tap up to three of your normal dice in that roll and the tray's roll button turns gold and reads Reroll. Press it. If you press WP with nothing picked it rerolls your lowest failures, up to three. Hunger dice are never rerolled.

It costs your character 1 Superficial Willpower damage, which is written to the sheet first. If that save fails you read "Willpower could not be saved. No reroll was made; try again." and nothing is rolled. The new roll appears as its own line labelled with Willpower. Under its dice a "rerolled" line shows each first face struck through beside its new face.

Blood Surge

When you roll your own character with an Attribute in the pool the tray can offer Blood Surge? with the extra dice your Blood Potency gives, like "+2 dice". Press it and the next roll takes the bonus. The chip then reads Blood Surge with an X to take it back. Its Rouse Check comes after the action.

How that check is made follows the Rouse checks row. On Auto it's rolled and saved for you. On Off or Ask a Roll Blood Surge Rouse button waits in the tray for you to press.

When Blood Surge can't be used the chip is greyed out and a line under it says why:

  • "Blood Surge works only while a live session is open."
  • "Blood Surge is unavailable at Hunger 5."
  • "This character cannot Rouse the Blood."
  • "Blood Surge is available only when rolling your own bound character."

A frenzy roll never offers it. A character with the Stolen Blood variant Bane makes more than one Rouse Check for Blood Surge. When those checks could take them to Hunger 5 the tray asks before it goes ahead.

What your table can decide

The storyteller can set Rouse checks for everyone in the Rolls tab of Table Rules. When they do the row in your Dice settings is locked and says "Set by the table."
