How V20 and Dark Ages dice work

  • OzzAuthor and editor

In V20 and Dark Ages you roll a pool of ten-sided dice against a difficulty. Each die that shows the difficulty or higher is a success. Each 1 takes one success away. Dark Ages rolls exactly like V20 in GhoulApp.

How to open the tray and make a roll is in The dice tray.

Difficulty

The tray's Pool runs from 1 to 25. The Difficulty runs from 2 to 10 and starts at 6. It's always there in V20 and Dark Ages, so Dice settings has no switch for it.

A pool you build from your sheet can move the difficulty, for example through a Merit or a power. The tray then shows the new value in red with an arrow after the one you set. Under the roll the result meter shows your successes and the difficulty you rolled against.

Botches

When none of your dice succeed and at least one shows a 1 the roll is a BOTCH. If you had successes and the 1s cancelled all of them the roll is a plain FAILURE. In the tray five or more successes show as a normal SUCCESS. The tray doesn't mark an exceptional success separately. The dice roller without a chronicle does.

Specialties

Turn on Specialty under the difficulty when your character's specialty applies. Its dot lights up. Then each 10 counts as two successes.

The Specialties row in Dice settings can do this for you when the pool comes from your sheet. Off ignores specialties. Auto applies a specialty on a trait you rolled. Ask puts a chip in the tray when a specialty fits and you press it to use it.

Willpower for a success

You can spend a point of temporary Willpower for one automatic success. That's the Willpower success row in Dice settings. On Ask a roll from your sheet shows a "Spend 1 Willpower?" chip. Press its check mark to spend it. On Auto the point is spent on every roll that allows it. Off leaves it to you.

That success is added after the 1s are counted, so it also keeps the roll from botching. Your sheet loses the point and the roll shows "Willpower -1, +1 automatic success". If you're out of Willpower the tray says so and nothing is spent.

Blood Points

A power with a fixed Blood cost can take it for you before the roll. That's the Blood points row in Dice settings. On Ask the tray shows a chip like "Spend 2 Blood Points?" with "-2 BP" beside it. Press its check mark. On Auto the chip reads "-2 BP, Auto" and the points are taken by themselves. On Off you track the cost yourself.

The roll then shows "Blood Points -2". If you don't have enough the tray says "Not enough Blood Points" with what you have and what it costs. Nothing is rolled.

The limit per turn

During a live session with a turn order running your Generation limits how much Blood you can spend in one round. The tray shows how much of it you've used, like "This turn 1 of 2".

GenerationBlood per turn
10th to 13th1
9th2
8th3
7th4
6th6
5th8
4th10

Below 8th is only reachable for a character made as an elder. Ghouls and revenants spend one a turn. Dark Ages starts Generation at 12th, so the same Generation dots put a Dark Ages character one step lower and the limit can be higher.

The storyteller can lift the limit for one character for the round. In the turn order a character's row has a blood drop button for it, labelled "Allow (name) more Blood this round". The row then shows "Blood open".

Virtues and Willpower rolls

Pressing Willpower or a Virtue's name on your sheet puts that roll in the tray. At the live table they're also in your actions. Dark Ages uses your Road's Virtues. V20 and Dark Ages have no frenzy panel: your storyteller asks for a Virtue roll. See Frenzy checks.

What your table can decide

The storyteller can set Specialties, Merits and Flaws, Blood Points and Willpower for a success for everyone in the Rolls tab of Table Rules. When they do that row in your Dice settings is locked and says "Set by the table."
