The dice use the wrong edition's rules

  • OzzAuthor and editor

The tray picks its rules from the character who rolls. When no character is involved it uses the chronicle's edition. So most of the time "wrong rules" means the tray is reading a different sheet or a setting than you think.

You can tell which rules are on from the tray itself. V5 shows Hunger next to the pool. V20 and Dark Ages show Difficulty and a Specialty switch. V6 shows the Final pool.

Someone changed System in the dice settings

This is the usual cause. System in Dice settings switches the tray between V5 and V20 by hand. A custom chronicle offers V6 as well. Once you've picked one by hand it stays until you open another chronicle or reload the page, even when you press traits on a sheet of another edition. Open the dice settings and set System back.

Changing System also sets the difficulty back to that edition's start: a target number of 6 in V20 and one success needed in V5. The Specialty switch stays on only when you go to V20.

The rows further down the dice settings change with the system too. V5 shows Official V5 dice, Rouse checks and for storytellers Offer a Compulsion. V20 shows Blood points and Willpower success. If you see the wrong set of rows the wrong system is on.

Commands like /r 7 roll with the same System.

The pool came from another sheet

When you press trait names on a sheet the tray switches to that sheet's edition, as long as nobody picked a System by hand. If a storyteller rolls for a V20 NPC and then makes a plain roll the tray is still on V20. Build the next pool from the right sheet or set System yourself.

No character is linked

With a linked sheet your rolls follow that sheet's edition in every chronicle. Without one a player rolls by the chronicle's edition. Link your sheet as Link your character to a chronicle describes and your rolls follow it.

In a custom chronicle with no linked sheet the tray goes with the edition most of the chronicle's characters use. Dark Ages characters count as V20. A tie or a chronicle with no characters yet rolls V5. V6 wins only when it's the biggest group outright. Dice in a Custom chronicle has more.

The chronicle has a different edition than you thought

The edition is chosen when the chronicle is made. See Create a chronicle. Dark Ages chronicles roll by V20 rules on purpose, because Dark Ages dice work the same way. A V6 character can only play in a custom chronicle.

A setting is locked

If a row in the dice settings is greyed out and says "Set by the table." the storyteller has decided it for everyone in Table Rules. Only they can change it. "Suggested by the table." means you can still pick your own.
