How do I learn a ritual?

  • OzzAuthor and editor

A character with at least one dot in a ritual Discipline gets a ritual card for it on the sheet. In V5 that's Blood Sorcery Rituals or Oblivion Ceremonies. In V20 and Dark Ages it's Thaumaturgy Rituals, Necromancy Rituals and the other traditions, such as Abyss Mysticism, Sadhana Rituals or Koldunic Rituals.

  1. Open the sheet in the editor and press Spend XP.
  2. On the ritual card press + Add Ritual.
  3. Learn a Ritual lists the rituals up to your Discipline's rating. You can search them by name or description and change the order with Sort By. Rituals you know are marked Already Known. Pick one and press Learn Ritual.
  4. Press Commit to confirm the spend.

The ritual shows on the card under its level. A ritual costs its level x 3 XP in V5, V20 and Dark Ages unless your chronicle's Table Rules set another price. If your table uses a ritual that isn't in the list Create Custom Ritual lets you give it a name, a level and a description. A custom ritual you learned has an edit button next to it to change it later. It's a pencil or a feather on a Dark Ages sheet.

In a chronicle where the storyteller approves spends step 4 opens the XP Request window instead. Press Send Request. The cost is filled in and you can change it before you send. The storyteller sees the ritual's name, its Discipline and its level along with your reason. When they approve it the ritual appears on your sheet.

With Free Edit on the ritual is added at no cost. To take one off turn on Spend XP or Free Edit, hover over the ritual and press the X (Forget Ritual). Forgetting a ritual doesn't give the XP back.

A new character also gets one free level 1 ritual in the creator. In V5 that's for Blood Sorcery and Oblivion. In V20 and Dark Ages it's for every ritual Discipline except Koldunic Sorcery.

V6 has no rituals.
