Keep things hidden from players

Most records in a chronicle have their own visibility. Some start hidden and some start visible. Anything players can't see shows a muted eye for you. When you're unsure preview the chronicle as a player.

What players never see

The XP page, Planning, Prep and Settings are for the storytellers. The Harpy Ledger is too, except for a player whose character holds the Harpy or Chancellor title. A section you turned off is gone for everyone.

Player visibility

NPCs, wiki articles, locations, relationships, hierarchy ranks, battles and timeline events share one control, Player visibility. Everyone shows the record to all players and Storyteller only hides it from every player. Specific Players hides it from everyone except the players you pick. Each of them has a switch in the Revealed to list that reads Revealed or Hidden. Each change saves at once.

What starts hidden and what doesn't

RecordWhen you make it
NPCStoryteller only
BattleStoryteller only
Item on the live stageHidden
Wiki articleEveryone (once published)
Location, territory, routeEveryone
Relationship, hierarchy rankEveryone
Timeline eventEveryone
MapEveryone with chronicle access

So the ones to watch are wiki articles, locations, relationships and timeline events. Choose Storyteller only before you save if a player shouldn't see one yet.

NPCs, field by field

A new NPC starts hidden. Turn on Reveal to players when you introduce them. Players then see the name, the portrait and the public notes.

You can also reveal an NPC's details one at a time in Manage Reveals: name, portrait, clan, sect, generation, sire, concept and so on. Their identity starts revealed and their stats, description and haven start hidden. Players see "???" for a hidden name and a question mark for a hidden portrait.

Maps

A whole map has its own Visibility. Everyone with chronicle access means every member plus visitors if the chronicle is public. Chronicle members keeps visitors out. Selected people and coteries is only the people and coteries you pick. Map managers only leaves it to the storytellers and the moderators allowed to manage the map.

Notes

A note is private to whoever wrote it unless it's marked Public, which lets every member read it. At the live table a note asks Who can read with four choices: Only me (nobody else, the storyteller included), Storyteller, Chosen people or Everyone.

The live stage

Items you put on the stage during a session start hidden. So do items you bring in from Planning. You see them dimmed. Players don't get them at all. Show them one at a time. On a computer you can also press the chip that counts them (for example "3 hidden") to reveal them all at once. You're asked to confirm first. You can hide single items again afterwards.

Facades

A Facade is a false identity. Players see the Facade's name and details in place of the real ones while you and the other storytellers always see the truth. On an NPC open the Facade step, turn on Enable Facade and fill in only the fields you want to fake. Empty fields keep showing the real value. Map pins can have a Facade too.

Facades are on for every new chronicle. In Settings Enable facade turns them off for the whole chronicle. Let players use facade lets players give their own characters one. That one starts off.

Things players make

A player's notes start private. A wiki article a player writes waits for your approval unless you let players publish at once. Until then only they and the storytellers can read it. A thread in Messages says at the top who can read it. A word sent through the aftercare box goes to the storytellers only.
