Find and manage your NPCs

  • OzzAuthor and editor

Once a chronicle has a few dozen NPCs the question is finding the right one in the middle of a session. The NPCs page lets you search the cast, sort it and keep tonight's people at the top. Adding people is in NPCs.

Finding someone in the cast

Switch between Gallery, Board, Cards and Table. Search NPCs looks at names, dispositions, clans and sects. Group sorts the list by clan, sect (Standing in Dark Ages), status or importance. Sort orders it by name or by when they were last seen.

Storytellers get more. They can filter by Tags, group by their own custom groups and sort by deck order. Players never see tags.

The Last seen rail shows which nights each NPC last turned up in a recap.

On deck and hidden

Storytellers see the cast in three bands. On Deck is for the ones about to matter tonight. Not on deck is everyone else players can see and Hidden from players holds the ones they can't. Drag an NPC from one band to another to move it or use On deck and Stand down in its menu. Customize sections under NPC tools renames the bands.

Custom groups under NPC tools builds groups of your own beside On Deck. Manage tags edits the chronicle's tag list.

Each NPC's menu in the list also has Quick view, Edit, Reveal to players or Hide from players and Delete.

The NPC's page

Open an NPC to see their page. The tabs are Overview, Relationships, their boons, Timeline and Stats. Storytellers also get Inventory, where the NPC's handouts live. They get Appearances too. The overview has the biography, their places, description, possessions and haven plus your own notes if you're the storyteller.

At the top storytellers get Edit, Manage Reveals, Manage Facade when the chronicle allows Facades, Lifecycles, a control for who can see the NPC and Delete. Manage Reveals lets you hand out details one at a time as the players learn them, like the clan but not the sire. More on that in Keep things hidden from players.

The stat block on the Stats tab has its own article, NPC stats in each edition.

Deleting

Delete removes an NPC for good along with any boons they're part of. The confirmation says how many boons go with it. There's no archive. If someone's left the story it's usually better to set their status to Final Death, Missing or Unknown and keep the record.
