Damage and conditions at the table

A fight leaves marks. At the live table the storyteller writes them with two modules: Damage for the Health track and Conditions for short states like Blinded or a Compulsion. Open both from Modules in the header, under "Dice and conflict". On a small phone Modules is inside Tools. A module opens on your own screen only.

The turn order, the timer and counters are in Turn order, timer and counters.

Who you can pick

Both modules start with a list. At the table is the chronicle's player characters. In the scene holds the NPCs in the turn order, on the stage, carrying a condition or already holding damage from this scene. Press a name to work on it and Change target to go back to the list.

Damage

Only the storyteller has Damage.

The Damage module on a V5 character with Superficial picked

Choose Hit or Mend at the top. For a hit set the Amount and the Type. The amount runs from 1 to 20 and starts at 2. The After this line shows how the track will look before you commit. Press Apply with the number on it. You'll see "Applied to" and the name with an Undo right after. Mend has one button for each kind of damage, like Mend 1 Superficial. Each press takes off one box.

The track follows the target's own edition, so a Dark Ages NPC in a V5 chronicle keeps its seven health levels.

A V5 sheet takes Superficial or Aggravated. When a vampire takes Superficial damage Halve Superficial (Kindred) is ticked for you, since the book halves it for vampires, rounded up. A full V5 track turns Superficial into Aggravated. The state line reads Unhurt, Hurt, "Impaired: -2 dice to Physical pools" or for a vampire "Torpor, if Aggravated fills the track". A mortal or a ghoul reads "Out of the fight".

A V20 or Dark Ages sheet takes Bashing, Lethal or Aggravated, with Lethal picked first. The state line shows the health level and its dice penalty. Damage past the last level is dropped. Willpower isn't touched in any edition. In V20 and Dark Ages Willpower is a pool you spend on the sheet.

A V6 sheet has no damage track here yet. The module says "V6 damage follows its playtest." A record with no Health track at all says so too.

For a player character this writes straight to their sheet and the panel says "Writes to the character sheet." If the sheet changed in the meantime the app reads it again and asks you to apply once more. For an NPC the hit carries a Scene only mark. It's kept for this scene and Save to roster writes it to the NPC for good.

Crippling injuries (V5)

When your Table Rules turn on crippling injuries a V5 player character who's already Impaired and gets hit brings up Crippling injury. The roll button adds the Aggravated on the track to the die, so with two boxes it reads Roll d10 + 2 Aggravated. Press it or Not now. The result names the injury. A total of 13 or more is Death or Torpor. Add as a condition puts the injury on the character.

Conditions

Conditions are short states with what they do to a roll. Everyone can open the module. Only the storyteller adds or removes them.

Press Add a condition on a row, search or pick from the list and set two things. Who sees it starts on The table. With Only me the player doesn't see it and their dice show a "Storyteller modifier" in its place. Ends is By hand, End of scene, End of session or After rounds. After rounds takes 1 to 10 rounds and counts down as the turn order moves. Press Apply to add it.

What's on the list depends on the edition of the target.

  • V5 has impairment, crippling injuries and Compulsions with the clan's own Compulsion first. Mortals and ghouls get no Compulsions.
  • V20 has combat states, frenzy and Rötschreck, a few afflictions and a Blood Bound condition for each active bond on record.
  • Dark Ages uses the V20 lists with two changes. Its Blinded is +2 difficulty on anything that needs sight and its afflictions hold only Poisoned.
  • V6 has no list yet. The module says "V6 conditions come with its playtest."
  • In a Custom chronicle each sheet uses its own edition's list.

Players see Your conditions with each rule and when it ends. A player with no character at the table sees "You have no character at this table." Conditions also show on the portraits. One set to end by hand stays across sessions until you remove it.

Giving a Compulsion (V5)

In V5 a bestial failure can bring a Compulsion. When Offer a Compulsion is on in the tray's dice settings the storyteller sees Compulsion? under a bestial failure in the feed. Players never see it.

Press it and pick one from the clan's list or the general ones. Roll for one picks for you. Tick Also add it as a condition to put it on the character until it ends. If the Compulsion costs dice that cost joins their rolls too. Then press Give this Compulsion. The player decides how to act it out. Willpower can't end a Compulsion.
